Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers (-154, 8)

For two weeks, the Twins have been sending a message to the Tigers that they are not going away. Minnesota has won 11 of its last 13 games, closing the gap on first-place Detroit to two games in the AL Central race.

Detroit may seem secure with ace Justin Verlander on the mound. But in the righthander's last nine outings vs. Minnesota, the Tigers have lost seven times.

Meanwhile, the Twins are starting rookie lefthander Brian Duensing, who has been one of baseball's best pitchers over the last month. As a starter, Duensing is 5-0 with a 2.06 ERA.

This is a nice spot to grab a motivated underdog with a hot pitcher.

Pick: Twins

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Colorado Rockies (-171, 9.5)

The Brewers have gotten some sloppy pitching of late, playing above the total in their last four games.

They are playing out the string with a visit to hitter-friendly Coors Field, where lefthander Chris Narveson will be pitching for the first time.

While Narveson has been able to limit his runs allowed since moving into the rotation earlier this month, he has given up a homer in each of his three starts.

Rockies starter Jason Marquis led the National League in wins for most of the season but is stumbling toward the finish, allowing at least five earned runs in four of his last six starts.

Pick: Over

New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals New York Mets
+101 at 5DIMES > 10h.
On Tuesday the Bonus Play is on the NY.Mets game 953 at 7:05 eastern. The Mets have taken 10 of 15 games from the Nationals this year. Tonight they have M.Pelfrey taking the mound. The Nationals counter with JD.Martin. Both pitchers have struggled of late. However the Mets fit into a nice system thatr pertains to their low scoring loss and Wshingtons pathetic win percentage. Look for the Mets to rebound and take game 2 of this series. Congrats to those on the nice Bonus Play winner on Monday nights radio show. On Tuesday I have a big system play in bases. Jump on and cash out on this solid play.bol RV

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Clay Buchholz (7-3, 3.21 ERA), Boston Red Sox

Say hello to Boston’s No. 3 starter. The kid with a no-hitter already under his big league belt was called back up to the bigs in mid-July. He had some mixed results early on but he’s looked real sharp over his last six outings.

Buchholz is 4-0 with a 1.38 ERA in five September starts. The Sox have won in each of his last eight trips to the mound and the under is 6-3-1 in his last 10 games.

Felix Hernandez (17-5, 2.49), Seattle Mariners

Even when he gives up a few runs, King Felix is frigging impressive. The Mariners ace hurler struck out a season-high 11 batters in a 5-4 win over the Blue Jays last week.

He’s battling Zack Greinke and CC Sabathia for the American League Cy Young honor and he’s making a strong case for himself.

Hernandez is 4-0 with a 1.15 ERA in September.

“His stuff was unbelievable tonight,” Jays centerfielder Vernon Wells told reporters after the loss. “He left a lot of guys shaking their heads, just trying to figure out what to do to put a ball in play.”

Slumping

Jason Marquis (15-12, 3.98), Colorado Rockies

Marquis had been enjoying a career season, but over the last month he’s pitched like a marginal No. 5 starter. He has 6.49 ERA and batters are hitting .313 off him over his last six starts.

The Denver Post hinted that Marquis has been so ineffective that he might lose his rotation spot in the postseason. Pretty crazy seeing how he was representing the Rockies in the All-Star game just over two months ago.

Colorado is 1-5 over Marquis’ last six appearances, even though the club had been the favorite in each of those games.

Mike Pelfrey (10-12, 5.08), New York Mets

It’s hard to believe this righty was 4-1 with a 3.88 ERA after his first nine starts. He’s 1-3 with a 6.39 ERA this month. The Mets have dropped four of his last six trips to the bump and the over is 4-2 over the same stretch.

Winner on the UNDER between Florida and Atlanta last night, now 40-24-4 with our comp plays the last 68 days.

For Tuesday, take the UNDER between Kansas City and the Yankees.

These teams were delayed by the rain drops last night, and with the Yankees resting players this last week of the season, we don't think there is going to be a whole lot of cohesion for the pinstripers the next few days.

With last night's UNDER, these teams are now 11-3-1 UNDER the total in their last 15 series meetings.

It will be Anthony Lerew against AJ Burnett, and while Lerew is "getting his feet wet", Burnett has been throwing the pill solidly down the stretch, and while he probably go more than 5 innings, we think they will be shutout innings.

As the string of the long season is finally coming to its end, we take the UNDER between the Royals and the Yankees to come through on Tuesday night.

Play the LOW.

(965) ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
(966) SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS
Take "Over"

Arizona's offense busted out against the Padres. In fact, that was part of a 6-3 run over the total. For this game, a pair of pitchers are on the mound who allow a lot of free passes. Doug Davis of the D-Backs has 96 walks in 191 innings, and in his last three starts (7.16 ERA) he has walked 9 in 16 innings. Jon Sanchez of the Giants walks a ton of batters, too, and sports a 6.43 ERA his last three starts, walking 7 in 14 innings. Play the Diamondbacks/Giants Over the total.

Rained out on Monday, I'm coming right back with a FREE winner on the Twins in Game 1 of the doubleheader with the Tigers in Detroit.

It all comes down to four games in three days for these teams if they want a spot in the playoffs. Minnesota knows it has to win three of the four games to have any shot of winning the division, while Detroit knows getting just two will almost guarantee it a postseason position.

Detroit leads the division by two games, but the Twins have been coming fast. They are 11-2 in their last 13 games and on other hot streaks of 5-1 on the road, 4-1 as an underdog, 20-7 against right-handed starters, 16-6 in divisional games and 5-0 on Mondays.

Minnesota’s Nick Blackburn (11-11, 4.23 ERA) has fantastic in his last two starts, beating both the Indians and White Sox. He gave up two runs and didn’t walk a batter in 13.1 innings and over his last seven outings he’s held the opposition to three earned runs or less each time.

Detroit’s Rick Porcello (14-9, 4.14 ERA) is just 1-2 against Minnesota this season with a 3.71 ERA. He’s got a 4.07 ERA at home this season and you can expect the Twins to get to him early and get to the Tigers’ questionable bullpen.

Play the plus-money and go with the Twins in the first game of this twinbill.

Big AL Central showdown goes today from Comerica Park, and my money in the opener is on the home team.

A rain-out last night forced a twin bill for Tuesday.

Minnesota may be the hotter of the two teams right now, but the Twins are still 4 games under .500 on the road this season, while the Tigers are 22 games over .500 at home for the year, and have taken 3 of the 5 games played between the clubs in the Motor City this year.

It will be Blackburn, and Porcello in this one, and while Blackburn has pitched well his last 2 starts, I am not convinced he is totally out of the funk he was going through for the better part of the second half of the season.

Porcello did lose at the Metrodome two starts ago, but is 8-3 at home for the season. I expect the rookie to come up big in another home start this afternoon.

Go with the Tigers to set the tone.

Cincinnati Reds +118

Home Bailey is finally starting to show the promise that made him the seventh overall pick in the 2004 draft, and he gives the Reds the edge at home tonight vs. St. Louis.

Our Tuesday night MLB selection is on the Cincinnati Reds at home in the Great American Ball Park over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Looking for a starter who is quietly putting up great numbers in the last month of the season while barely being noticed? Look no further than the Reds young righthander Homer Bailey. Once thought to be their top pitching prospect Bailey's first two-plus seasons worth of MLB service were pretty much a bust by any measure.

But the youngster may finally be starting to show the promise that the Reds had for him back in 2006 when he tore up the minor leagues. Over his last seven starts, going back to the end of August, Bailey is 4-1 with a stellar 1.99 ERA. Bailey won his last effort against Pittsburgh with yet another quality start and the only odd thing about that one was the fact that he didn't strike out anyone, although that probably has more to do with the patient Pirate bats rather than saying anything about the Reds hurler.

Veteran Joel Pineiro gets his next-to-last start of the regular season and the Cards would like for him to set a career-high in wins, but although he has 15 so far (and needs two more for the milestone) he also has 11 losses on the year. Since St. Louis won 11 straight Pineiro starts from July 3 through September 1, they have now gone 1-3 in his last four.

This season Pineiro has two starts at Great America Ball Park and is 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA. Cincy has been surprisingly very competitive against the Cards in '09, going 6-7 versus them so far with only this three-game home series left. Take the Reds.
